Bone regeneration

1. Topics to be covered:

  • Principles of bone regeneration;
  • Hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis hormones (FSH and TSH) in bone remodeling;
  • The role of prostaglandin and prostaglandin receptor analogs in regulating bone formation;
  • The use of bone graft substitutes to induce and enhance bone regeneration.
     

2. Educational goals:

To discuss principles of bone regeneration with particular reference to:

  • inductive signals;
  • responding cells;
  • biocompatible matrix.
     

3. Target audience:

  • undergraduate students and postdoctoral fellows in skeletal biology;
  • residents in orthopedics and traumatology;
  • bone biologists from pharmaceutical companies looking for new drugs to regenerate bone.
     

4. Teaching methods:

Topics will be covered by interactive informal discussion and by simple drawings.
