Meet the Professor
Stem cell therapy and bone
Saturday 13 May 2006
13.00-14.00
Topics to be covered
- Definition of regenerative medicine
- Skeletal stem cells: definitions, isolation, characterization
- From basic
biology to clinical applications:
- Identification of true populations of skeletal stem cells
- Controlling
cell proliferation: approaches and problems
- Controlling lineage
commitment and lineage fate decision
- Current status
Educational goals
- To introduce participants to concepts of stem cell
therapy
- To introduce participants to biology of skeletal stem cells
- To introduce
participants to obstacles facing using skeletal stem cells in the
clinic
- To discuss strategies designed to get the skeletal stem cells
into the clinic
Target audience
- Clinicians with interest to be updated about skeletal stem cells
- Basic
scientists to discuss problems facing translation of the laboratory
findings to patients
- Biotechnology companies and persons working for them
to discuss issues related to capitalizing on
our current knowledge
of
stem cells and translate
them
into the clinic
Method
I will prepare two case studies, one of a patient with
complicated fracture and localized bone disease and another
patient with
systemic bone disease.
From these two cases I will try to engage the audience
in how to go from patient to the lab and back to the
patient again.
I will
prepare
some
hand-outs to
be used in the session.
