Meet the Professor Lance Lanyon (London, UK)
This workshop will explore in an informal, interactive discussion format, without any prepared presentation, the role of mechanical stimulation for the establishment and maintenance of normal bone architecture, the processes by which it is influenced by bone loading and the likely mechanisms involved. The course of the discussion will be greatly influenced by the input of the participants but is likely to involve discussion on the merits of the methods available to load bones and measure bone strains in vivo and strain cells in vitro. The workshop should be relevant to all those interested in mechanical loading and the skeleton but is probably of most value to those whose experience in this area is not great. Each participant should leave with an understanding of what the likely mechanical stimuli for bone cells are; how bone strains may be measured; and what animal models are available for investigating bone’s adaptive response to mechanical loading.
