Meet the Professor
Matrix biology
Friday 12 May 2006
13.00-14.00
Topics to be covered
- Classes of molecules found in the extracellular matrix of
bone
- Expression of matrix proteins as a function of osteogenic
differentiation
- Contributions of matrix proteins to biomineralization
- Non-structural roles of matrix proteins
- Changes in matrix proteins
as a function of aging and in disease states
Educational Goals
- To become familiar with components of the extracellular matrix
of bone
- To understand the role that they play not only as structural elements,
controlling biomineralization, but in regulating cell activity
- To
recognize that changes in extracellular matrix in genetic and acquired
disease states impact on bone quality
Teaching Methods
- A brief didactic overview of matrix biology
- Discussion of factors that control expression of matrix proteins, thereby
controlling biomineralization
- Presentation and discussion of examples in which bone matrix is disrupted
