Meet the Professor
Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs)
Saturday 13 May 2006
13.00-14.00
Topics to be covered:
- BMP protein receptors and their nuclear effectors in bone
formation
- BMPs in development
- Clinical experience in regeneration of bone
- Systemic administration
of BMPs in restoring bone mass in mice and rats
Educational goals:
To discuss BMP biology related to the following issues
- Can we biologically regenerate bone when normal physiological
repair mechanisms fail?
- BMP- as the first approved recombinant protein for treating long
bone non-unions, spinal fusions and acute fractures
- Deciphering the
binding code of BMP-receptor interaction
- The role of BMPs in the development of joints and segmentation of articular
cartilage
Target audience
- experts in the field of bone regeneration and repair
- undergraduate students and postdoctoral fellows in skeletal biology
- clinicians dealing with local and systemic regeneration of bone
Teaching methods
Topics will be covered by simple poster(s) containing important data
Principals of structure/function analysis will be discussed on flip chart
drawings.
The audience will be involved by asking their opinion on various aspects
of basic and clinical science of bone formation and regeneration.
