A recent webinar on bone marrow fat imaging. By Katharina Jähn-Rickert
About every 4 weeks, the ECTS Webinar Series on Bone, Muscle & Beyond features an EACCME®-accredited educational lecture by leaders in the field of bone research. The webinar topics include a great variety in basic and clinical research aiming to attract a broad audience to view-in and participate in the discussion after each webinar.
One of those recently held webinars was entitled “Bone marrow fat imaging: technical basics and clinical applications” and was presented by Dr. Xiaojuan Li, who is the Director of the Program for Advanced Musculoskeletal Imaging at the Lerner Research Institute in Cleveland, Ohio, USA and leads an interdisciplinary team focusing on advanced imaging and image processing techniques for several musculoskeletal diseases, including osteoporosis. The webinar held on the 15th of July was moderated by the chair of the ECTS Academy Dr. Annegreet Vlug. With the topic of bone marrow fat imaging, Dr. Li has been at the forefront to quantitative imaging.
We invite you to listen to the recordings of past webinars in the member area of the ECTS website. Stay tuned for more ECTS webinars and we hope to welcome you to the next webinar held by Dr. Christa Maes on skeletal stem and progenitor cells of the osteoblast lineage on the 19th of August.
Vitamin D status in Hawaii – What can we learn? ByPetar Milovanovic
Vitamin D is known as “sunshine vitamin,” and exposure to sunshine is recommended to stimulate vitamin D production in the skin. Thus, it is interesting to examine vitamin D status in populations living in tropical climates with abundant sunshine. In this context, there is a recent study on 25(OH)D levels in older adults in Hawaii, reporting that more than a third of the older population is “deficient or insufficient” in vitamin D, despite living in one of the areas with abundant sunshine.
We asked Prof. Roger Bouillon from Catholic University of Leuven, a leading expert in vitamin D, to comment on these apparently counterintuitive findings: “The Hawaii study on vitamin D status conveys a few important messages.
News from the world: FGF-23 as a risk factor for contrast-associated acute kidney injury. By Cristiana Cipriani
Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) is a hormone whose primary function is the regulation of phosphate homeostasis. Increase in FGF23 levels is observed in association with the decline of renal function in both acute and chronic conditions. As such, FGF23 is a biomarker of acute kidney injury, a major health issue whose timely diagnosis is of utmost clinical significance.
Contrast-associated acute kidney injury may occur after diagnostic and interventional procedures using iodinated contrast media, such as coronary angiography. Huang et al. recently proposed the assessment of serum FGF23 levels in the evaluation of risk for contrast-associated acute kidney injury in patients undergoing coronary angiography.
