Greetings on behalf of the 2021 Board of Directors of the ECTS. By Bo Abrahamsen, ECTS president
September and a new academic year is almost here. As you know, the members of the Board are elected by the Annual General Meeting of the ECTS and election is for a three year period with the possibility of standing for re-election. Many thanks for contributing actively to the election process and for supporting the ECTS.
All members of the Board of Directors have individually assigned responsibilities to take of in the ECTS in addition to being the official representatives of the organisation.  I would like to briefly go through what these tasks are and how they are filled by individual Board members so that you have a better idea how the daily running of the ECTS work and who is the elective representative in charge of each aspect of what we do.

Congratulation to the 2021 ECTS Fellowship awardees! By Cristiana Cipriani
Two fellowships have been assigned in 2021 to young investigators working in clinical and basic/translational research. They are Dr Maria Papageorgiou from the University of Geneve and Dr Biagio Palmisano from Sapienza University of Rome. Here we have the pleasure to report a brief summary of their project and their own feelings about having been awarded with such a grant.

Background and vision of the new co-Chair of the ECTS Academy. By Ciro Menale
It is an enormous privilege for me to contribute to the ECTS Academy activities as the newly elected ECTS Academy co-Chair and to collaborate with the current Chair Annegreet Vlug.
I am a Research Associate and Lecturer in Physiology at University of Naples “Federico II” Medical School, Naples, Italy. During the last years, I have conducted my research in the laboratories headed by Dr. Anna Villa and Dr. Cristina Sobacchi at IRGB-CNR and Humanitas Research Center in Milan, Italy. I focused on novel therapeutic approaches for the RANKL-dependent osteopetrosis by exploiting gene therapy and 3D culture models. I also contributed to the dissection of the anabolic role of RANKL in bone physiology. At the same time, I investigated the interaction of bone and immune cells focusing on bone loss and immune system defects driven by oxidative stress. Nowadays, in the laboratory directed by Prof. Sabrina Diano, my attention is aimed at dissecting bone cell metabolism, investigating the role of nutrient availability in the regulation of bone cells function. To further elucidate cellular and physiological basis of bone homeostasis, I am also interested in the local and hypothalamic regulation of energy metabolism, connecting bone diseases and metabolic disorders.
Taking advantage of this great opportunity, I would like to invite young researchers and clinicians in the musculoskeletal field in Europe to join us by applying to ECTS Academy 2022 basic/translational and clinical calls released in September 2021 (deadline October 31st 2021).

Mechanical tibial loading remotely suppresses brain tumors by dopamine-mediated downregulation of CCN4. By Antonio Maurizi

In recent years many studies demonstrated the beneficial effect of mechanical loading on bone metabolism and body homeostasis. Indeed, bone mechanical loading produces local and systemic signals able to affect different target cells and tissues beyond the bone. In particular, increasing interest is arising around the role of bone mechanical loading in pathological conditions such as the development of cancer-associated osteolytic lesions. In this regard, it has been demonstrated that the mechanical loading suppresses the tumor-induced tibia osteolysis in a model of breast cancer, in an intensity-dependent manner. Little is currently known about the effect of mechanical loading on the development of breast cancer-associated metastases in non-skeletal tissues.
In this article, the authors focused on the effect of bone mechanical loading on breast cancer-associated brain tumors. Indeed, about 15% of women with breast cancer develop brain metastases and the latter are difficult to be targeted because of the blood-brain barrier. Here the authors showed that the bone mechanical loading alone or in combination with the FDA-approved dopamine modulator Fluphenazine (FP) contributes to the suppression of brain tumors acting on the dopamine-Lrp5-CCN4 axis. In particular, they demonstrated the existence of remote mechanotransduction “from bone to brain”, suggesting that the bone mechanical loading can be used as adjuvant therapy for treating breast cancer-associated brain tumors.
