Enhance your career with a mentor – by Hermann Agis

What is the ECTS Academy mentoring program?

It is difficult for young investigators to find coaching and mentoring outside of their institutions. However, if you want to succeed in your career you need in addition to high quality research and persistence also high quality mentoring. The ECTS Academy Mentoring program represents a unique opportunity for young investigators to be matched with an experienced professional and mentor for career coaching, support and guidance. This program is based on one-to-one communication to boost the skills, knowledge and performance of the mentee. In the application process the future mentee suggests three mentors of a pool of mentors from a wide range of sectors and professions including clinical and basic science, industry, and more. The mentee can choose a mentor based on a first come first serve basis. The mentoring process starts with a matching procedure where the potential mentors are asked if they have conflicts of interests. After successful matching the mentee and the mentor can interact freely. The program term is one year and ends with a short report by the mentee for quality assurance.

What do former and current mentees say?

“The ECTS Academy mentoring program fueled my ambition to look for a post-doc career abroad.”

„The ECTS Academy Mentoring offers the opportunity to gain views on the world of research in a laid-back atmosphere.”

“My mentor gave be valuable tips on where to find funding.”

So who can be a mentee?

Mentees should be open minded new investigators (defined as PhDs/post-docs up to three years after completing their PhD/MD/DMD or equivalent) and motivated to improving their career development and skills. These applicants must be ECTS members.
