After the success of the first digital master class in 2020 and because of the uncertainties in organizing a face-to-face course, ECTS has decided to repeat this great event. We are therefore delighted to propose you the second digital master class co-organized by ECTS and the COST Action GEMSTONE (GEnomics of MusculoSkeletal traits TranslatiOnal Network) from August 24 to 27, 2021.
The ECTS PhD training course has been for many years one of the most important and attractive events for PhD students, trainees and young researchers interested in the field of musculoskeletal pathophysiology. ECTS and GEMSTONE have made an effort to organize a virtual event that resembles as close as possible to a face-to-face course; preserving the spirit and philosophy of close proximity and interaction between professors, students and between young researchers themselves. Participants will have the opportunity to present their own research during the different days of the course, sharing concepts and experiences with fellow students while also receiving feedback from senior and ECTS Academy scientists. As such, the program is rich with interactive workshops and speed mentoring sessions where cross-cutting topics will be covered, extending from life-long tips on career development to direct discussion with editors of the top journals in the field of bone research.
During the first day of the course, fundamental concepts such as the mechanisms of bone formation and resorption, and understanding osteoporosis treatments according to their bone-forming or anti-resorptive mechanism of action will be discussed. The second day of the course will comprise an overview of translational efforts employing cells, animal (zebrafish) and other models of human musculoskeletal disease; the use of novel analytical methods to investigate compound relationships between bone and non-bone phenotypes; and the use of genetics to stratify patients in a clinical setting. The third day will provide novel insights into hormonal influences on bone and cartilage. Special attention will be placed on osteoarthritis, from both clinical and basic perspective, focusing on pain mechanisms and biomechanics. After these exciting three days, the course will end with “one-to-few” sessions tailored by Masterclass faculty and ECTS Academy members, providing hints and tips to advance research careers, followed by an informal festive closing of the Masterclass.
ECTS and GEMSTONE hope that this unique training course will provide participants with top-of-the-notch scientific content and contribute to the professional growth of young researchers. Students at all stages of their PhD, trainees and young investigators are welcome to attend.
Don’t miss this exciting virtual event! The organizing committee and the ECTS PhD training action group will be delighted to welcome you to this online course.
