Bienvenue à Marseille. ByBo Abrahamsen
“We are all desperate to reconnect and talk about bone – join us and catch up with your friends and colleagues in the interactive experience that is the Digital ECTS Marseille 2020 Live Prime Time Congress. And it does not end there – we also offer you a broad scientific programme live or on-demand in the ECTS@Home meeting series.”
As President of the ECTS it is my pleasure to welcome you to the upcoming ECTS 2020 meeting, the online opportunity for sharing your research findings, reconnect with colleagues, play an active part in state-of-the-art update sessions and engage with the best of basic, translational and clinical bone researchers with an interest in European calcified tissue research.
Are you a young clinician or basic/translational scientist and looking to promote your career? Apply now for the ECTS Academy! My personal experience as part of it. By Martina Rauner
The ECTS Academy was founded in 2016 with the aim to bring together aspiring researchers in the musculoskeletal field to self-organize their activities and expand their network through personal contacts, which ultimately is destined to promote their careers. The ECTS Academy is open to anyone who’s work revolves around the musculoskeletal system and as such comprises clinicians of various disciplines, basic researchers, engineers, and epidemiologists. This opens the door to interact with a truly interdisciplinary group of scientists who are all linked with a common interest in musculoskeletal research. Throughout my time in the Academy, I have hugely benefited from the personal contacts I have made. Within the Academy, you meet so many motivated scientists, some of who have skills that complement yours and some who have similar research interests than you do – in any case, it is guaranteed that you will find new collaborators and ideas for your future research.
ECTS Fellowships and award: are you ready for the 2021 applications? By Barbara Obermayer-Pietsch and Peter Pietschmann
ECTS Fellowships: Challenge for young investigators!
In 2020, two calls are open to young researchers either for basic/translational or clinical research in the bone field. The ECTS would like to support specifically our young scientist generation, as applicants have to be within 5 years of MD or PhD graduation (excluding maternity/paternity leaves) and must not hold permanent faculty positions. Eligible candidates must be ECTS members and working in a European institution – however, there is no restriction on the applicant’s nationality.
Deadline for applications: 9 November 2020. You’ll find more information here.
ECTS Awards: Honors for well-known scientists!
It is time to submit your nominations for the ECTS named awards! You may consider your mentors and colleagues for these honors in memory of our colleagues and friends in the bone field.
Deadline for nominations: 30 November 2020. You’ll find more information here.
About getting older and more aggressive – the example of osteoclasts – by Teun de Vries
Studies that link clinical observations to molecular cell biological approaches are always the best reads. It has been known for a long time that women lose bone from 35 years onwards, and that this process is accelerated after menopause. Of course, bone loss has been attributed to loss of estrogen, more osteoclasts, to different types of osteoclasts, to inflammatory factors that facilitate osteoclast formation such as TNF-α. However, little is known about alterations at the osteoclast precursor level. Anaïs Møller et al., in Bone research have studied alterations at the osteoclast precursor level by comparing osteoclast formation from CD14+ monocytes in a large cohort of 40-66 year old women. Effect of aging was inversely correlated to type I collagen N-terminal peptide in blood. At the osteoclast level, it was crystal clear that menopause caused more resorption by osteoclasts. Interestingly, they could pin it all down to the states of methylation of the promotors of osteoclast genes DC-STAMP and Cathepsin K already at the monocyte level. Therefore, aging makes monocytes more prone to differentiate into osteoclasts.
