The ECTS Academy, a vibrant network of early career researchers in the musculoskeletal field across Europe, held its annual retreat in Dubrovnik, Croatia, in October 2024. Hosted at the Inter-University Center Dubrovnik alongside a PhD training course, the retreat served as a platform to plan future initiatives, develop leadership skills, and strengthen connections among members.
A central focus of the retreat was preparing for the ECTS 2025 congress in Innsbruck. Members worked on designing engaging and innovative sessions for the event. Among the highlights was the development of an Open Forum on Alternative Models for Studying Bone Properties, which will explore cutting-edge advancements such as bone organoids, explant models, and machine learning applications. The Young ECTS Lounge is being transformed into a vibrant space dedicated to networking, career opportunities, and supporting first-time congress attendees. Additionally, preparations are underway to celebrate the Academy’s 10-Year Anniversary in Innsbruck, where alumni and co-founders will join current members to honor a decade of fostering research excellence and collaboration.
The retreat also emphasized leadership and professional growth. A half-day workshop led by Key & Spark sro explored diverse leadership styles, including the roles of observer, supporter, director, and inspirer. Participants gained practical insights into conflict resolution and effective communication, empowering them to navigate the challenges of leadership during their career development.
Reflecting on the retreat, members expressed a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to advancing the Academy’s mission of innovation, mentorship, and collaboration. The gathering reinforced the Academy’s role as a cornerstone for supporting young researchers in the musculoskeletal field.
The ECTS Academy looks forward to its 10-year anniversary celebration and its continued journey of growth and achievement. Updates on upcoming activities and preparations for Innsbruck will follow, and we are excited to meet the musculoskeletal research community at ECTS 2025.
