The Korean Society for Bone and Mineral Research (KSBMR) by Ho-Yeon Chung

The Korean Society for Bone and Mineral Research (KSBMR) is a scientific society in Korea, which was founded in 1989 by professor Hun-Ki Min, an endocrinologist from Seoul national university with his colleagues.
The KSBMR membership consists of basic scientists as well as clinical investigators of endocrinology, orthopedics, gynecology, dentistry and other areas. The KSBMR membership has been growing. As of now, KSBMR has 1,572 registered members, of which 400 are actively involved within the society. The KSBMR organizes many academic activities, such as scientific conferences, clinical osteoporosis update (COU), clinical densitometry course (CDC), advanced program for metabolic bone diseases and young leader’s camp (YLC). KSBMR organizes 2 scientific conferences a year, a national one for Koreans in autumn and an international one in spring. The domestic conference is divided into two tracks. One track deals with clinical topics and the other deals with basic research. Recently, the participation of basic researchers is more than that of medical doctors.

The international Seoul Symposium on Bone Health (SSBH) was held in Seoul in celebration of KSBMR’s 30th anniversary this year. In 2019, we organized a joint symposium in which 3 societies, KSBMR, JSBMR and ASBMR participated in the SSBH program. Promoting international partnership is of growing importance. KSBMR has had particularly close relationships with the Japanese sister organization JSBMR, with which we have been organizing joint sessions for 10 years. With request from the ECTS, the KSBMR has been participating in West Meets East sessions during European Conferences. We hope to broaden scientific partnerships with ECTS through joint sessions and sharing good educational programs.

The COU is a one-day educational program about osteoporosis treatment for the primary care physician held twice a year. The CDC is also a one-day training program about bone densitometry and diagnosis of osteoporosis for physicians and technicians. The advance program is aimed to people who want to become a bone specialist, and the contents cover various metabolic bone diseases as well as osteoporosis. Most of the participants are working in general hospitals and university hospitals. The YLC is a mentoring program for basic researchers for 3 days. The presenter and the mentor usually maintain their relationship.

The physician’s guide for osteoporosis is updated annually or every two years. The KSBMR are engaged in academic activities through business agreement with National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) and Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA). The fact sheet on osteoporosis and fractures based on the nationwide claims data and the data of national health and nutrition examination survey has been published.

The KSBMR publishes the Journal of Bone Metabolism (J Bone Metab). The journal provides an international forum for researchers and clinicians to present and discuss relevant issues in bone and mineral research. The categories of manuscripts are original articles, case reports, reviews, editorials and letter to the editor. J Bone Metab is indexed in various web sites including Scopus, KoreaMed, Synapse, MedRIC and Google Scholar, PubMed and Embase.
