ECTS2020@home: Avant-première of ECTS Congress in October 2020

ECTS2020@home: Avant-première of ECTS Congress in October 2020 – by Bram van der Eerden

The unprecedented times we are in due to the Covid-19 outbreak forced us to postpone the annual ECTS congress in Marseille until October 20-24th later this year. Unfortunately, a few invited keynote speakers indicated that they are not able to join the meeting in October, so the idea was brought forward to organize an online event around the days of the originally planned ECTS to give some of the speakers the opportunity to expose their latest research to the ECTS community.

Therefore, the Scientific Program Committee in collaboration with the E-learning action group has organized a webinar event on Tuesday the 19th of May at 13.50 h Central European Time (CET) entitled “ECTS2020@home: avant-première of ECTS Congress in October 2020“.

Young Scientists at the time of a pandemic

(Young) Scientists at the time of a pandemic – by Petar Milovanovic

In the time like this, when uncertainty, fear, existential problems, as well as closed labs, interrupted experiments, cancelled conferences, ruined plans, etc. are our reality, we need to adapt and find the ways to endure. Due to restrictive policies set by many governments and epidemiologists’ recommendations, many researchers are confined at home, and are suddenly forced to find alternative ways for working, teaching, mentoring, etc. Basically they regard the time in self-isolation as an opportunity (as long as they are healthy), not just as a frustration. One of the most famous living poets and philosophers in Serbia, confined at home due to governmental restriction for people aged over 65 years, has said in a recent interview that now is the time when he cannot excuse himself that he does not have enough time. Indeed, many scientists think similarly, and also try to be productive during this time, to finish some papers that have been waiting for their attention too long, write grant applications, etc. An interesting text published in April in Nature’s career column “My lab is closed to me because of the coronavirus. Here’s how I’m planning to stay productive” gives us an US-based Chinese researcher’s perspective on the topic and illustrates one way of coping with the situation.

ECTS and GEMSTONE organise a Digital Masterclass

ECTS is organizing its first Digital Masterclass in collaboration with the GEMSTONE COST-Action: an exciting new online event dedicated to PhD students, trainees and young investigators. – by Claudine Blin and Fjorda Koromani

The Covid 19 pandemic has impacted our work habits, including at the level of our Society with the cancellation of the annual ECTS PhD training Course. Over the years, this course has become an unmissable event for our students, often a first opportunity to interact closely with experts and start building a network.

Because we know that our students are the future experts in the field, training is one of the missions of ECTS. Therefore, in order not to leave our students alone during this period of uncertainty, ECTS has decided to offer them an original alternative by organizing its first online course.
