ECTS 2020 goes virtual – Enjoy a 3-month Educational Program. By Christa Maes and Chris Meier
Dear ECTS members
As you know, the 47th Annual Meeting of the European Calcified Tissue Society is going virtual. The ECTS scientific program committee has put all efforts to present an attractive and stimulating scientific program directed at clinical researchers, basic and translational scientists, and allied health professionals working in the musculoskeletal field.
The goal, however, was not only to present an ECTS 2020 Digital Congress as a Live Prime Event which will take place from 22-24 October 2020, but to embed ECTS 2020 Digital in a 3 months educational program with weekly ECTS@Home series scheduled from 1 October until 12 December 2020.
News from the ECTS Academy – New chair-elect and academy representative in the ECTS Board and new mentoring option. By Annegreet Veldhuis-Vlug and Marietta Herrmann
The ECTS Academy has be founded as a daughter society of the ECTS. The concept follows the model of interdisciplinary Young Academies: young researchers self-organise their society to foster personal contact and networking among the most talented young scientists. With the aim to promote scientific excellence through fostering collaborations and mentoring young scientists, the ECTS Academy organizes several activities targeted to new investigators within the ECTS society and during the annual meeting. The chairs of the academy are also represented in the ECTS board. Recently elected as new co-chair of the academy, Annegreet Veldhuis-Vlug is now to take the next turn.
Portrait of the French Society for Mineralized Tissue Biology – Société Française de Biologie des Tissus Minéralisés. By Jérôme Guicheux and Claudine Blin
SFBTM was founded in 1997 by 3 French researchers, Pierre Jurdic, Chantal Chenu and Luc Malaval with the aim of promoting scientific exchanges in the field of mineralized tissue biology. Thus, its initial goal was the organization of the French Days of Mineralized Tissue Biology. The first ones took place in Lyon, France, in January 1998 with more than 140 attendees.
After more than 20 years, SFBTM is the only French Society focusing on skeletal and non-skeletal calcified tissues as a whole. It has about 200 members including basic, translational and clinical researchers ranging from senior faculties to master students, PhD students, postdocs, engineers and technicians. Their themes of research cover all aspects of the biology of calcified tissues: from unicellular organisms to humans, from biomaterials and carbonate biology to osteoarticular and dental pathophysiology, from basic research to therapeutic development. This diversity is the major pillar of SFBTM ensuring its originality, strength and excellence. For more information please visit the website.
Focus on rare bone diseases: Intelligent changes in approach to teaching molecular and cell biology in medical environment. By Petar Milovanovic
-Inspiration from a real-life “experiment” at the University of Amsterdam-
The beginning of the new academic year brings teaching into focus again. While we are thinking about the organizational aspects of teaching in light of COVID-19 pandemic, it is also important to think about the program. Specialized courses of molecular and cell biology may be not so popular among medical students and related students, particularly due to a lot of theoretical information and lack of perceived practical relevance. However, Schoenmaker, Deng, and de Vries have recently published an interesting article in Frontiers in Public Health, where they shared how they improved their teaching of molecular biology and attracted students’ interest in their course. Namely, they embedded a genetic disease that severely affects the musculoskeletal system, fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), in all aspects of a course for an international group of Research Master Human Movement Sciences students at the University of Amsterdam.
