ECTS@Home – A superb and varied scientific program…what else? By Cristina Sobacchi and Jean-Jacques Body
The 48th Annual Meeting of the European Calcified Tissue Society is going virtual and starting in a few months. Besides the Live Prime Time from 6th to 8th May, the program comprises 5 educational days (19-20th May, 10th-11th June, 18th June) in the format ECTS@Home. Similarly to what is required to prepare the best ever coffee (a specific roasting temperature and time, professional machines, a careful coffee beans selection and a nice coffee service), the ECTS scientific program committee has put together all the ingredients to guarantee an attractive and stimulating ECTS@Home program.

Join us for ECTS Planking challenge: Charity event. By Melanie Haffner-Luntzer, Carolina Medina Gomez and Donata Iandolo
Exercise is important not only for muscle but also for bone health. Since the ongoing pandemic situation reduces the possibilities of everyone to work out properly and to get enough physical activity and maintain a (bone-) healthy lifestyle, the ECTS Academy invites all participants of the virtual ECTS conference to the #ECTSPlankingChallenge!
This challenge will be our annual charity event and the money raised from this event will be donated to an osteogenesis imperfecta patients organization in Belgium: ZOI(zelfhulp osteogenesis imperfecta vzw).
Join us for the #ECTSPlankingChallenge, to increase your bone and muscle strength and have some fun while donating to OI patient organization.
Diagnosis of hypophosphatasia in adults. By Cristiana Cipriani
Hypophosphatasia is a rare metabolic bone disease characterized by impaired activity of the tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase caused by the mutation of the ALPL gene. The varied clinical manifestations of hypophosphatasia may affect several organs and systems (skeleton, muscle, dental and neurological). Presentation of the disease may range from a lethal perinatal phenotype to the pediatric and adult disease.
In adults, the diagnosis of hypophosphatasia may be delayed by low specificity of clinical manifestations and hetereogeneity of symptoms. Additionally, as Desborough et al. pointed out in a recent article, the low awareness of the disease may lead to misdiagnosis and/or late diagnosis. The authors reported interesting data on the clinical and biochemical characteristics of 20 adult patients with hypophosphatasia.
